The remarkable Catalan architect Antoni Gaud`i’s firt foray into furniture design ws a desk for his own use. designed in 1878. Subsequent furniture designs were always specificlly for the interiors of his own buildings.
The Casa Calvet was built between 1898 and 1904 for Don Pedro Martir Calvet a Barcelona textile manufacturer. Oak Furniture including desks and this armchair was designed in 1902 for office in the building and made by the firm of Cas y Bardes. G audi’s previous furniture had overtones of the gothic Revival derived from designers such as viollet-le-Duc and even incorporated naturlistic decoration. This chair marks a deprature from reproductions of historic precedents . which Faudi achieved by synthesizing the decoration with the structure of the chair. Most notable is the organic, plastic character of the design whereby the elements appear to grow out of one another.
there are references to architectural motifs ‘C’ scrolls and a suggestion of a cabriole leg for example. but this baroque elements are subsumed into the overall coherent vegetative form of Gaudi’s exuberant chairin the same way that the building for which it was designed expressed organic principles of design.
